FAQ of Roman Toygers
1. What do toygers eat?
Toygers eat the same thing that any other breed of cat would normally eat. A high quality food that meets its dietary needs. Roman Toygers feeds only a raw food diet though our kittens are all introduced to dry cat foods as we realize that not everyone can feed raw nor does everybody want to feed thier cats a raw food diet. By teaching our kittens to eat dry foods and raw foods they are easily adjusted to thier diet in thier new home with no problem. As with any dietary change it is best to introduce it slowly to avoid stress and upset stomachs.
2. Were real tigers used to create the toyger?
No! The toyger breed was developed and is continuing to develop through the selective breeding of domestic cats. Different domestic breeds were used in the creation of the beautiful designer cat we call toygers but I assure you that NO real tigers were used nor will they ever be used as it is genetically impossible.
3. What kind of temperment do toygers have?
Toygers are very unique, not only in looks but also in temperment. Toygers have an amazing "dog like" quality. They LOVE to be with you! They are very loving and gentle and prefer someone who wants to spend time with them. They will spend hours seeking your affection and will happily lay with you while you're at your pc, in bed or just watching television. You will find that the toyger is different than many other exotic looking breeds in the simple fact that they are so loving and sugary sweet.
4. Who created the toyger?
The toyger was created by the gifted and very talented visionary breeder Judy Sugden, daughter of Jean Mill creator of the Bengal breed. Judy started the toyger breed in the early 80's and has dedicated a lifetime to the creation of the spectacular toyger!! Thank you Judy!
5. Why are toygers considered so rare?
Toygers are rare by the shear numbers that exist in the world. Because the toyger breed is relatively new by cat breed standards there are less than 50 breeder world wide. This is changing rapidly though. As the toyger breed is still a labour of love and a "ongoing development" there are new toyger breeders emerging as the popularity of this cat reaches new people. Many people are still yet unfamilar with the toyger breed and when they do see them they are star struck and naturally want to own one.. then breed them. The natural progression of more and more breeders breeding this wonderful cat is happening quite quickly and will continue to grow as the popularity of the toyger is skyrocketing. There are just too few animals to go around at the present time and this makes the toyger quite rare.
6. How much do toygers cost?
The toyger kittens are evaluated against the toyger breed standard. The closer a kitten comes to the breed standard the more valuable he/she becomes as a potentially useful breeding queen or stud. Of course we cannot keep all the kittens we produce so we have to find loving and caring homes for some of our fantastic cats that we choose not to use in our breeding program. These animals often start from 800 Euros and up. All of our animals are sold with contracts and pets will be de-sexed before going to thier new homes. No exceptions! On occaision we will have toyger outcross kittens for a lower price and yet they still offer the wonderful personalities and some of the same qualities as thier purebred bretheren.
Breeder and show quality cats are rarely available at this time but we may sell them to approved homes only. If you are interested in breeding toygers please contact us to discuss it further.
7. Do you have a health guarantee for your toyger kittens?
Yes we do have a very extensive health guarantee on each and every toyger or toyger outcross kitten that we sell. Please email us for specific details of our heath guarantee.
8. What do I need to do to buy a toyger from you?
First you need to contact us! We are very particular where our toyger kittens go to live. We want only the best for them. Of course the demand for toygers often keeps our new kitten buyers waiting until we have a new litter of toygers to be available.
Be prepared to answer lots of questions about yourself, your home environment, your family etc. as we really want to place the proper kitten wth the proper home. A home that will provide not only emotional and loving support for the kittens lifetime, but also a home that will also make sure to provide for his veterinary and health needs.
9. I want a toyger but I don't want it de-sexed, will you sell me one?
Well.... This is always a hot topic. We are contacted all the time by potential buyers that want a "non sterilized" toyger. Chances are we will not sell a non de-sexed cat. Very few non de-sexed animals are sold and those that are sold will ONLY go to approved breeding programs that are prepared to work closely with us.
Because there are many back yard breeders who are more concerned with making a profit by churning out kittens in a kitten mill than to dedicate themselves to breeding responsibly and working to improve the breed, we have opted NOT to sell whole animals unless, like I said before but it's worth repeating, they go to APPROVED breeding programs of breeders who are willin to work with us. If you are interested in starting a toyger breeding program please feel free to contact us and we can discuss it in further detail. Not everyone is emotionally, mentally and financially prepared to dedicate the resources needed to be a responsible breeder of ANY BREED of animal.
